Anorexia is a mental illness that occurs mainly in young women between the ages of ten and thirty, but about one in ten patients are boys and young men. Anorexia is an eating disorder, eat very little. Anorexia patient has an intense fear of getting weight, and a twisted perception of weight.
A recent survey in Hong Kong showed that about 10% of people with anorexia and bulimia symptoms or predispositions, and about 3% of those with more serious anorexia and bulimia. Other age groups or those who need to maintain weight due to professional needs may also be born, such as actors, dancers, models, jockeys, wrestlers, etc. have a higher attack rate. Patients with this disease often appear in wealthier families.

Symptoms

·         The patient's excessive attention to body and weight has become the standard for their own evaluation. They are extremely fearful of obesity and have a strong desire to lose weight. Losing weight has become a habit for them. Even if the patient's weight is too light, they still hang on to the weight.
·         People with anorexia will eat very little or only drink, then force themselves to refuse to eat, exercise excessively, take laxatives and diuretics, self-induced vomiting.
·         In a short period of time, the weight is reduced rapidly, and the weight is reduced to below 75 to 85% of the standard weight.
·         Patients usually maintain normal work and rest and deny hunger and fatigue.
·         Some anorexia also has a vicious circle of bulimia, which means eating a lot of food in a short period of time and then excreting food out of the body in a variety of intense ways.
·         Long-term cause’s gastrointestinal failure, spit when eaten, cannot eat.
·         Hypotension, slow heartbeat, hair loss, osteoporosis, fragile nails, pale or yellowish, chills, poor physical condition, and women have more chances of menstrual disorders or suspension.

Causes

·         The patient's perception of the body image is distorted. Dissatisfied with one's own body shape, thus creating a wrong diet concept that seeks beauty more than health.
·         Due to professional relationships, you must stay slim for a long time.
·         Feelings related to body fatness and thinness in family and affection.
·         It may be a huge change in life, unable to withstand the sudden pressure; or may be buried in the long-term troubles, cannot be eliminated, and eventually turned into serious health problems.
·         Sex hormone secretion disorders.

The duration

It can be varied from a few months to several years.

Treatment

Patients with severe must be hospitalized in the hospital, forcing patients to eat, to save a life, not because of lack of nutrition and even death. The goal of treatment is to encourage patients to return to eating, absorb nutrients to restore weight, and supplemented by long-term psychotherapy. In general, there is no medical treatment for this condition.
The "Hong Kong Eating Disorders Rehabilitation Association", established in 1999, is aimed at people with eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia. Rehabilitation will organize different activities on a regular basis, such as patient and patient support groups.
