Although brushing and flossing regularly remains the best way to care for your teeth, you might find that dental maintenance alone won’t give you a mouth full of pearly whites. If your teeth don’t look as white as they should, even if you do brush regularly, the problem might lie with your diet. There are plenty of foods, beverages, and other substances that can stain your teeth. If you want perfectly white teeth, here are some items you may want to avoid.

Sugary Foods and Drinks

Just about everyone is aware that sugary foods and drinks, such as candy and soda, are bad for their teeth, but they might not know exactly why. As the bacteria in our mouth breaks down sugar, our body produces acids that erode tooth enamel and create pits that can become cavities. Over time, these cavities, pits, and eroded tooth enamel can cause teeth to decay and ruin their appearance along with their health.
There are plenty of sugary foods that can cause these problems, but the worst are carbonated drinks, such as soda. It’s bad enough that soda is made up almost entirely of simple sugars, but the carbonation in these drinks increases acidity and contributes to tooth decay more than other food and drinks.
 Other sugary foods that can cause problems include sticky candies, such as caramel or taffy, and sweet breakfast cereals. Many different kinds of candy can stick to teeth while processed breakfast cereals contain a combination of sugar and starch that can get stuck in the plaque between your teeth.

Starchy Foods

Like sugar, starch raises the levels of acid produced by bacteria in the mouth, and that can lead to tooth decay and a less-than-perfect smile. While there’s nothing wrong with eating bread, pasta and potatoes, stay away from the more refined starchy foods if you want to protect your teeth.

Coffee and Tea

Coffee and tea raise the levels of bacteria-produced acid in the mouth and can lead to tooth decay. Worse, these drinks tend to be sipped slowly, meaning that acid levels may be higher in your mouth for a longer period of time. Coffee and tea have also been known to stain teeth, especially for those who drink more than a couple cups each day.

Red Wine

Red wine falls into the same category as coffee and tea. It increases acid levels in the mouth, and it stains teeth far more than coffee or tea. It also doesn’t take much red wine to leave stains on one’s teeth. You should always drink red wine in moderation, and not just because it’s alcoholic.

Beneficial Food and Drink

It should come as no surprise that water is great for your teeth since it helps wash away cavity-creating acids. Citrus fruit such as oranges, lemons, and limes are also good for your teeth. Though these fruits are acidic, they also promote the flow of saliva, which neutralizes the acids in your mouth and protects your teeth.
Finally, milk and cheese are good for your teeth. Not only do they contain plenty of calcium, but they also increase the flow of saliva much like fruit.


These are just a few tips for having whiter, healthier teeth. As you can see, your diet plays a major role in your dental health, so make sure that you are cutting down on the foods that damage your teeth and eat the foods that promote a healthier mouth.
